Making an In Home Newborn Studio

When I first started to think about taking on studio newborn clients I looked to rent an external studio.  Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything that would meet my budget but I also knew I couldn’t continue to drag my newborn posing bag, studio light and everything else to clients homes every session.  That was when I decided to think about making an in home newborn studio in my own home…in a spare bedroom.  Read on with me and I’ll tell you a little about how I did it.

Choosing a Room

I had a spare bedroom in my house with a bathroom attached so I thought that would be perfect.  The space was big enough for a parent relaxing area, along with my beanbag posing area and a little table for snacks and drinks.

That way parents could sit right next to me as I worked with little newborn and watch all the action.  As we go I will link a few things in each photo as a reference.

On the opposite wall was where I put my savage paper hanger and my basket posing station.  I also had all that set up when the parents arrived so that I could move quickly from bean bag posing to basket shots and then the parent posing shots.  I usually worked in that order for every session.  Bean Bag posing – Basket Posing – Parent / Sibling shots.

Make sure you always have some snacks ands drinks on hand.  These sessions can take hours sometimes and every client was extremely thankful for all the goodies I provided.

I always made sure to give clients the WiFi password and provide them with samples of all the various photography products that they could purchase.  A lot of the time I would sell them on the album while they sat there and watched me work!

Prop Storage

The great thing about using a spare bedroom is the closet.  This is where I stored all my props, blankets, posing items and various other things I used for our sessions.

Overall, Making an In-Home Newborn Studio from a spare bedroom in my house worked really well for me and my business.  Let me know if you have any questions about how I did this or anything you see in the photos.  I would be happy to help you out!
